Everything you need to know to choose the right boxing gloves for your situation

Are you starting out with boxing and buying boxing gloves for the first time? Which size boxing gloves suits you depends on several factors, including your weight. You may also be wondering which material is best for your boxing gloves.

Don't worry. In this blog we'll tell you everything you need to know when buying boxing gloves. That way you'll be completely ready to rumble!

What size boxing gloves do I need?

The size of boxing gloves is measured in ounces (oz). The right size depends on your body weight and the type of training.

Which boxing glove size matches my weight?

  • Up to 50 kg: 8 oz
  • 50–60 kg: 10 oz
  • 60–75 kg: 12 oz
  • 75–85 kg: 14 oz
  • 85+ kg: 16 oz

The fit of gloves can of course vary depending on factors such as your hand size, your hand wraps or your inner gloves. You're welcome to come to us for advice on this.

How many oz boxing gloves per type of training?

How you use your boxing gloves affects which size you need. Heavier gloves provide more protection and are therefore suitable for more intensive training:

  • Competitions: always provided by the organisation
  • Bag training: use bag gloves for this
  • General training: depending on your weight (see above)
  • Sparring: same as general training

Does it matter whether I'm a man or a woman when it comes to boxing glove size?

There are no specific boxing gloves for women. The weight of boxing gloves in ounces (oz) is the same for men and women. Women often need boxing gloves in size 10 or 12 oz. These models have less padding but are also more compact, giving you more comfort and control during boxing.

Boxing gloves: which material is best?

When buying boxing gloves, you can choose from various materials in our range. Which material is best for your boxing gloves depends entirely on your training frequency, budget and personal preferences. We can give you advice, but without context we can't give a single definitive answer about which boxing gloves are best for you. Each type of material has its own advantages and disadvantages:

Leather boxing gloves

Fit like a glove: leather moulds to your hands, providing extra comfort during sparring.

Give a fresher feel: the natural material breathes better, preventing unpleasant odours.

What to keep in mind

If you're buying leather boxing gloves, keep in mind that you need to air them out properly after use. Use a deodorising spray if needed to keep the gloves fresh.

Who are they for?

If you train more than once a week or have been in the boxing world for a while, leather is a smart choice for you.

Synthetic leather (PU) boxing gloves

Require little maintenance: easy to clean. Do make sure to air them out and use a deodorising spray.

What to keep in mind

Synthetic leather boxing gloves — especially with intensive use — don't last as long as leather ones and don't mould to your hand.

Who are they for?

Perfect if you're just starting out with boxing or only train occasionally.

Microfibre boxing gloves

  • Sturdy and durable: stronger than standard PU, so they last longer.
  • Comfortable: they breathe better than PU boxing gloves and have a natural fit.
  • Easy to keep clean: air them out properly and use a deodorising spray and they'll be ready to use again.

What to keep in mind

Microfibre boxing gloves are often more expensive than those made from other materials, as this material is usually used by high-end brands.

Which closure is best for my boxing gloves?

Boxing gloves sometimes have a velcro closure and sometimes a lace-up closure:

  • Velcro: easy to put on and take off, suitable for training.
  • Laces: provide a tighter fit, often used in competition training.

Which boxing glove brand do we recommend?

Our range includes various boxing gloves for women, men and children. We have the largest range in Europe available, so you can imagine that we stock all kinds of brands. We naturally recommend boxing gloves from our own brand — Rumble — but boxing gloves from brands such as Venum, Rival, Hayabusa and Twins are also excellent.
