Which boxing gloves do I need?

The first question to ask when finding the right pair of boxing gloves is: how many times per week are you going to train and what type of training will you be doing? Are you going to do punching bag training? Then go to the section 'Punching bag training'. Are you going to do technique and sparring sessions? Then check the section 'Technique & sparring'.

With every pair of boxing gloves you will find an overview that clearly displays the features of the glove, so you can see at a glance whether it meets your needs. Do you have a question about which size boxing gloves you need? Check out our blog 'size guide'.

Technique & sparring

If you follow technique and sparring sessions, we naturally recommend boxing gloves. We are often asked whether there is a difference between boxing and kickboxing gloves. There is no difference between them. Some brands do focus more on boxing than on kickboxing, but ultimately what matters is that the glove suits what you are looking for. There are several things to consider when purchasing boxing gloves. The biggest difference is the material used for the glove: PU or leather. Leather products have many advantages over PU. With leather boxing gloves you sweat less, stitching holds better, the lifespan is longer, and leather gloves mold to your hands for a better fit. The padding on the knuckles is also important, as it absorbs the impact of your punches. Higher-end gloves also feature palm padding, which keeps the glove compact and allows you to catch punches properly on the inside of the glove during technique sessions. It is important to choose the right size — check our blog 'size guide' for guidance.

Do you train technique and sparring once a week?

If you train once a week, we recommend starting with a PU glove. These are perfectly suitable for getting started. Our range of PU kickboxing gloves is very extensive, and our entire assortment has been thoroughly tested for quality — so ultimately the choice is yours based on which glove you like best and what you want to spend. If you are certain you want to keep training long-term, we recommend leather boxing gloves for a significant step up in quality. We have made a selection of our PU and leather boxing gloves for you. The leather selection was compiled with a focus on price/quality ratio, since the gloves will be used once a week.

Do you train technique and sparring 2–3 times a week?

If you train 2–3 times per week and are ready for a new pair of boxing gloves, we recommend leather boxing gloves. Training more frequently means the products are used and put under greater stress, requiring higher quality — which is why we recommend leather. Leather products have many advantages over PU: less sweating, better stitching adhesion, a longer lifespan, and a better fit as the glove molds to your hand. We carry a wide range of leather boxing gloves from various brands, all thoroughly tested for quality — so the choice comes down to which glove you prefer and your budget. We recommend choosing a mid-range glove (€65 to €165). Click here for our collection of mid-range leather boxing gloves.

Punching bag training

If you do punching bag training, we recommend purchasing a bag glove. For beginning boxers, we recommend using boxing gloves. Boxing gloves have considerably thicker padding and feature a closed thumb, providing better hand protection. For advanced boxers, we recommend a bag glove. Bag gloves are often recognized by their open thumb and harder, thinner knuckle padding. They are also much lighter, allowing you to throw faster and harder punches. The downside of bag gloves is that they offer significantly less protection than boxing gloves.

Do you train on the punching bag once a week?

For punching bag training, a PU boxing glove is a perfectly fine starting point. These gloves feature firm knuckle padding for good hand protection and are available from various brands. All brands we carry have been thoroughly tested and are good quality. A good model in this category is priced under €50. If you are unsure about which size you need, check the 'size guide' section.

Training more frequently means products are used and stressed more intensively, requiring higher quality — which is why we recommend leather products. Leather has many advantages over PU: less sweating, better stitching adhesion, a longer lifespan, and a better fit as the glove molds to your hand. When training 2 or 3 times per week, you can choose between a bag glove and a boxing glove (see the 'Punching bag training' section). Both leather bag gloves and boxing gloves are available from various brands. All our products have been thoroughly tested and are good quality. If you are unsure about which size you need, check the 'size guide' section.

If you train intensively on the bag, we recommend leather bag gloves. Bag gloves allow you to move quickly and maintain great contact with the punching bag when throwing punches. We carry several brands of bag gloves and particularly recommend the brand 'Rival'. With the RB-1 & RB-11, they offer two excellent bag gloves that resemble regular boxing gloves but feature bag glove padding. If you are looking for something at a lower price point, we recommend the Rumble Special Prof, Twins, King Pro Boxing, and bag gloves.
